Accessibility Advisory Committee
Purpose
The Quinte West Accessibility Advisory Committee consists of persons with disabilities and others from the community who have a direct interest in accessibility issues. The Committee was formed to make recommendations to City Council on matters relating to equal opportunity and access for all persons, regardless of needs, to participate as fully as possible, in all aspects of community life. The Committee assists in the development of initiatives that address the reduction and prevention of barriers in our community that would otherwise restrict accessibility for disabled persons. A disability may be physical, mental, visual, or auditory. The complete definition is contained in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Accessibility Advisory Committee are briefly outlined below.
- Review site plans for commercial/industrial developments and plans of subdivision, to provide insight and input regarding accessibility
- Review City buildings/facilities/infrastructure/services and make recommendations where barriers are identified
- Review by-laws of the City that incorporate any matter deemed to affect disabled persons in the community
